FORMA and its Foundation are born from an initiative of Contrasto which, created in 1986 to provide a new reference point for documentary photography, has become the leading publisher in this field, the most important Italian photo-agency and a dynamic cultural producer.
New York Lights by Saul Leiter
Presented by Forma in collaboration with Howard Greenberg Gallery of New York, this exhibit features an extraordinary, original collection of both black and white and color photographs, abstract and figurative paintings, as well as a splendid series of painted polaroids.
Saul Leiter was born in 1923 in Pittsburgh and began his studies at the theological college of Cleveland. At the age of twenty-three, he set off to New York to become a painter. His first black and white photographs were exhibited at the MoMA. In the late fifties, his fashion photography appeared in Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar. Over the next twenty years, Leiter continued to work in fashion. He lives, paints, and photographs in New York.
